AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF FELINE PRACTITIONERS UPDATES GUIDELINES FOR FELV AND FIV
Feline leukemia virus (Felv) has been the scourge of the domestic cat from the beginning of time. The virus causes cancer, bone marrow suppression and immune suppression. Vaccination has been available since the early 1980's and is crucial for outdoor cats. FIV, the Feline Immmunodeficiency Virus, causes an AIDS syndrome when it reaches its end stage. No vaccine is available in the U.S. against this infection. |

The AAFP has assembled a panel of experts to determine the approach to these viruses and some changes have been added since the 2008 prior revision. |
One of the biggest changes is that FeLV vaccination is now considered "core" for all kittens all the way up to age 1 year. Kittens are most susceptible to this infection and their ability to be managed as "indoors only" is sometimes not as easy as planned. |
Basic Principles of Vaccination and Testing
- The status of every cat should be known.
- Testing should be done as soon as possible after obtaining a new cat.
- Testing should be repeated whenever a cat gets sick.
- Testing should be done prior to vaccination for either virus.
- Testing should be done after exposure to a cat of unknown status.
- ALL KITTENS SHOULD BE VACCINATED AGAINST FELINE LEUKEMIA UP TO AGE 1 YEAR.
- FeLV vaccination becomes optional after age 2 years if the cat is indoors only
