DID YOU KNOW...

... That THE CDC AND FDA ARE SERIOUS ABOUT THE PIG EAR PROBLEM?

pig ear treats

Dogs love pig ear treats and they are one of the few chew treats that are not so hard as to break teeth. Exotic smoky flavors have been issues for dogs with sensitive stomachs but now there is a new problem: Salmonella infection in humans.

Yes, that is correct. It is the pet owners handling the treats that have been getting infected.

  • 127 people sick
  • 26 people hospitalized
  • 33 states involved including California

Dog Goods USA is recalling their "Chef Toby Pig Ear Treats" and the Lennox Group has recalled the Rawhide Express brand of chews but the CDC and FDA have gone a step further and have recommended that any pig ear treats be placed in sealed containers and thrown in the trash immediately.

DON'T BUY THEM, DON'T FEED THEM, DON'T EVEN TOUCH THEM.

There are a lot of news stories around but here is the CDC's direct link:

BE SAFE.

AUGUST IS 15TH WAS CHECK THE CHIP DAY

We checked a lot of microchips in the hospital that day but for those of you who weren't there, here is a refresher course since a microchip could save your pet's life one day.

Is your pet chipped? If not, come on down and we'll be happy to chip your pet.
No surgery needed. The chip is implanted with a needle.

  • Do you have your pet's chip number somewhere?
(Hint: most chips come with an ID tag that includes the registry phone number and chip number. Is your pet wearing one and is it legible? If not, consider ordering a new tag either from the registry or from any other pet tag supplier.)

  • Is the chip registered?
Best not to assume. You'd be surprised how many chips are never registered (very common with rescue adoptions where the chip is implanted by rescue but the registration is left for the new owner). Go to www.PetMicrochipLookup.org and enter your pet's chip number.

  • The chip is not a location device. It codes a unique number that can transmit to a scanner. If the chip is registered, the finder can contact the registry and notify you that your pet has been found.

  • Not every registry works with phone calls. Some will text you or email you. It is helpful to know more about your pet's registry and how it will contact you.

For all the technology we have in the hospital, a registered microchip can be just as life-saving. Take a moment and make sure the system will work for you if you need it. Don't just say your pet would never run away. We also have pet theft, earthquakes, evacuation by animal services, and other unforeseen events. Permanent pet ID can be priceless.
