SCARY SCARY NIGHT?

Don't forget noise phobia medications for sensitive animals.

Pets don't understand the noise coming from the sky and street when the fireworks start. They can become terrified, destructive, and can even escape from home.

Fortunately, there is some help for panic that may be just what your pet needs.

FOR DOGS

Sileo Oral gel may be just what your dog is hoping for. This product is an oral gel that is delivered with a special applicator just inside your pet's cheek pouch (between the lip and teeth) a couple of hours before the holiday festivities/scary noises begin. It relieves fear without sedating the pet and dosing can be repeated if necessary. The applicator can be a little tricky so be sure to practice it with one of our staff members before using it at home.

Sileo Oral

For even more details see sileodogus.com or contact us in case another option is more appropriate for your dog.

GOT A SENSITIVE CAT?

We have a kit called a "cat martini" which uses an anxiety relief powder that can be mixed in a measured amount of food. A cat that has had a martini a couple of hours before the noise event should stay indoors and be kept away from staircases or heights as he/she may be a little wobbly.

The martini is safe and may or may not be sedating; it is for relief from fear.

Contact us for more information.

Keep pets indoors and safe for the holiday. The Fourth of July is the number one day for pet escape.

DID YOU KNOW ...that grain-free diets are being investigated for creating taurine deficiency?

Taurine is a crucial amino acid in heart muscle health and certain breeds (cocker spaniels, golden retrievers) are particularly sensitive to developing cardiomyopathy and heart muscle disease from taurine deficiency.

What brands are involved?
We do not yet know but it seems to be those that use legume protein sources. Many small "boutique" diet companies do not employee properly credentialed nutritionists in product development. If you want to use grain-free food, avoid one that uses legumes and/or stick to major brands (that have proper research divisions).

Should we measure taurine levels in dogs on grain-free diets?
It can't hurt.

Should a dog on a grain-free diet be supplemented with taurine?
It may not be necessary in most situations but it can't hurt.

Why should we feed grain-free in the first place?
Grains are legitimate sources of protein, carbohydrate and fiber. In humans, there is a substantial amount of grain intolerance and, while this is not common in the pet population, many pet owners seek a food that follows these same rules for their pets. Food allergy with grain is uncommon but possible in pets. There is a huge misconception that the grain intolerances that humans experience translate to dogs and, in fact, they do not. Another misconception is that grain-free is low carbohydrate when usually potatoes or sweet potatoes are substituted making for a lower fiber more digestible carbohydrate source. In short, most dogs on grain-free food probably do not need to be. Grain-free is best used for dogs that need extra digestibility or who have issues with fiber.

Are you interested in making your pet's food by yourself? Many people want to skip the big corporations and/or simply want to be more involved in their pet's nutrition. The problem is that pet nutrition is complicated. Most diets that people make thinking they are using wholesome ingredients end up deficient without use of organ meats, or bones.

Balanceit.com is a service created by a veterinary nutritionist to assist in making balanced diet recipes for pets. They can make recipes for healthy pets as well as for pets with special nutritional needs. Many recipes are available free. The company also sells supplements that can be added to balance the diet out or provide a list of supplements you can buy on your own.

We invite you to check out this valuable service. Bon Appetite.
