FALL FELINE ELECTIVE SURGERY SPECIAL

We want the Summer Kittens to get off on the right paw in their new homes. With adolescence comes such objectionable behavior as fighting, caterwauling, urine marking, and furniture scratching. To help our kittens grow up into well-behaved ladies and gentlemen, we offer a low-cost special once a year as a service to our community for six weeks in the fall. A full service hospital at clinic prices! Between OCTOBER 1st & NOVEMBER 15th the following elective surgeries are half price:

 Male Cat Neutering:

$22.50

 Female Cat Spaying:

$37.50

 (includes one night hospitalization)

 Declawing:

$75.00

(Includes two nights hospitalization plus bandages)

 Soft Paws® available:

2 feet:

$20.00

4 feet:

$30.00

(Note: all cats in hospital for elective surgeries be current on distemper and rabies
vaccinations; cats must weigh at least 3 lbs for neutering and 4 lbs for spaying)

Click on any of the above procedures to go to it’s corresponding web page for detailed information on the surgery, it’s implications and/or alternatives available.

COMING SOON!

A NEW MONTHLY TOP SPOT that:

      • Kills FLEAS in Dogs and Cats
      • Prevents HEARTWORM INFECTION in Dogs and Cats
      • Kills EAR MITES in Dogs and Cats
      • Kills TICKS in Dogs and Cats
      • Kills ROUNDWORMS and HOOKWORMS in Cats
      • Kills SARCOPTIC MANGE MITES in Dogs

First there was Defend EXspot (now available as ProTICol, Biospot, and Control), then Program, Advantage, Frontline, and now Revolution.  The “topspot” format is just as popular now as it was a decade ago and each new generation of product promises better safety, better convenience, and now more and more broad spectrum of parasite control.

Should you change from a product that seems to be working fine just because the new one sounds better? Actually, one thing the TV commercials don’t tell you is that if you stick to one product and use only one product, your household fleas WILL ultimately develop resistance.  This shows at first as the product seeming not to last as long as it used to. It may be tempting to simply use the product more frequently but this only hastens the development of resistance in the population.

When your flea control product just doesn’t seem to last as long as it used to this is your cue to either change products or add an insect development inhibitor (ie Program or Sentinel) to sterilize the surviving resistant fleas.   We’ve learned from livestock management that it takes about 15-20 generations for an insect population to become resistant.  If we don’t practice what is called “integrated pest control” the miracle products that we use today won’t be of any help tomorrow.

SHOULD YOU CHANGE?

The answer is still maybe. There are currently three highly effective topspot products available today: Revolution, Frontline, and Advantage. They each have pros and cons. If you like one and want to stick with it, be sure to combine it with Program or Sentinel so as to prevent resistant fleas from passing on their resistance genes.  If you want to rotate products, you have plenty to choose from.

WELCOME DENICE

Our newest receptionist comes to Mar Vista Animal Center with a long history of working around animals, having been involved with animal rescue groups for the past 15 years and working as an animal hospital receptionist for the past six.

Born in Santa Monica, Denice is a native of Southern California. She has two cats and two dogs of her own, all rescue animals: Anniebananie is a Chow mix, Nipper is a Chihuahua Terrier mix, Lids is a feral Orange Tabby and Peaches is a feral apple-faced Siamese. Shown in the picture with Denice is Blaze, a lovable Shepherd mix rescue still looking for a new home.

HAPPY HALLOWE’EN

Enjoy the witches, ghosts and goblins who visit
this time of year, but remember to protect your pets:
  • Don’t let your dogs or puppies get into
the trick-or-treat candy (chocolate, especially, can be toxic)

  • Keep your cats and kittens indoors
where it’s safe (especially any black kitties)

NEW ON OUR WEB SITE

    ZINC POISONING

Find a penny, pick it up; for the day you’ll have good luck! Unless, of course, you try to swallow it. Pennies are no longer the little copper discs they used to be, as they are now made up of zinc and are especially toxic. To find out more about this syndrome, known officially as zinc induced hemolytic anemia, visit our newest topic in The Pet Web Library.

    FLEA PRODUCT COMPARISON TABLE

As described above, there are now several products to kill fleas on your pet. Just apply a little tube to the back of the neck, and fleas are gone for a month. But are all these products the same? No, one is not the same as another. To help eliminate confusion, here is a table that describes all aspects of Advantage, Frontline and Revolution side-by-side-by-side.
