No Fleas! drawing

A NEW MONTHLY TOP SPOT that:

      • Kills FLEAS in Dogs and Cats
      • Prevents HEARTWORM INFECTION in Dogs and Cats
      • Kills EAR MITES in Dogs and Cats
      • Kills TICKS in Dogs and Cats
      • Kills ROUNDWORMS and HOOKWORMS in Cats
      • Kills SARCOPTIC MANGE MITES in Dogs

First there was Defend EXspot (now available as ProTICol, Biospot, and Control), then Program, Advantage, Frontline, and now Revolution.  The “topspot” format is just as popular now as it was a decade ago and each new generation of product promises better safety, better convenience, and now more and more broad spectrum of parasite control.

Should you change from a product that seems to be working fine just because the new one sounds better? Actually, one thing the TV commercials don’t tell you is that if you stick to one product and use only one product, your household fleas WILL ultimately develop resistance.  This shows at first as the product seeming not to last as long as it used to. It may be tempting to simply use the product more frequently but this only hastens the development of resistance in the population.

When your flea control product just doesn’t seem to last as long as it used to this is your cue to either change products or add an insect development inhibitor (ie Program or Sentinel) to sterilize the surviving resistant fleas.   We’ve learned from livestock management that it takes about 15-20 generations for an insect population to become resistant.  If we don’t practice what is called “integrated pest control” the miracle products that we use today won’t be of any help tomorrow.

SHOULD YOU CHANGE?

The answer is still maybe. There are currently three highly effective topspot products available today: Revolution, Frontline, and Advantage. They each have pros and cons. If you like one and want to stick with it, be sure to combine it with Program or Sentinel so as to prevent resistant fleas from passing on their resistance genes.  If you want to rotate products, you have plenty to choose from.

SATISFACTION SURVEY

The next time you come by our hospital, be sure to ask reception about the SATISFACTION SURVEY (unless they have already given you one).

Netformance.com is a web start-up company that will attempt to provide on-line visitors to their site with rating information on a wide variety of businesses, with the ratings provided directly by consumers of those businesses. Although their business (and their web site) have not started yet, at this point in time Netformance.com is working out all the “bugs” and is testing the response rate to a number of different types of requests for consumer participation.

They have chosen to work with our hospital to test their reporting system. In order to accurately test their customer reporting software, and to encourage our clients to actually complete the (very short) survey, Netformance.com will donate one dollar to the Rescue Me Pet Foundation for each survey sent in.

Rescue Me Pet Foundation is an animal rescue group that saves abandoned cats and dogs and places them in loving homes. We see many cute kittens, cats and dogs from Rescue Me in our hospital when they are brought in for their first shots, for their spays and neuters and for any medical attention they may need before they are placed in new homes.

Every dollar donated helps rescue another kitten or puppy, so the more completed surveys Netformance.com recieves from our clients the more animals Rescue Me can save.

Featured product of the month:
C.E.T. PETITE CHEWS FOR DOGS

picture of CET PetitesThe American Veterinary Dental Society recommends a full dental cleaning every six months for your pet, just the same as your dentist recommends for you.  Still, imagine what that cleaning procedure would be like for you if you did not brush your teeth at all between dental visits.

Dental home care is the single most important aspect of regular dental care. With proper home care, your pet may not need that six month dentistry, thus saving you the expense and your pet the extra anesthetic.

For more information on home dental care options for your pets, see our Dental Home Care page in the Pet Web Library.
