Newest Doctor at Mar Vista:
Welcome Gretchen Becker, D.V.M.

Picture of Dr. Becker

Dr. Becker attended the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine after an illustrious college  (and very nearly Olympic) basketball career. You may have seen her on television as she was a Science Diet spokesperson and you may have heard her on the  “Great Day America”  radio show as the on-the-air pet care consultant.

At home, she cares for her son as well as pets Tooey (a Lab-German Shepherd cross), Tabitha (a cat) and Wilt (a Peking Duck). She joins us most Sundays here at Mar Vista Animal Medical Center.

GARDEN TIPS: SAFE PLANTS

If unplanned periodic demolition of the garden by the family dog is a fact of life, it is good to know the plants he or she is chewing up are non-toxic. It may not help the garden any, but knowing your pet isn’t going to get sick because of it is one less thing to worry about. This month’s featured safe garden plants that are safe for your pets are presented below:

CareCredit Website Now Allows On Line Applications

Picture of CareCredit card

WHAT IS CARECREDIT ANYWAY?

CareCredit is a special medical credit card that provides interest-free payment plans for veterinary care for your pets, dental care for yourself, ophthalmology services for yourself and more.  Because it is a medical card (and not accepted at just about any store anywhere like a VISA or MasterCard) it is substantially easier to gain approval.

WHY MIGHT I WANT A CARECREDIT CARD?

You never know when a medical expense will come up and your budget may not be prepared.  With a CareCredit card you can make reasonable payments interest free.

WHAT OTHER HOSPITALS ACCEPT CARECREDIT?

Because CareCredit has been endorsed by the American Animal Hospital Association, it is widely accepted at local veterinary groups including: The Animal Emergency Care Center (the local after hours emergency veterinary center), The Veterinary Cancer Group plus there are human medical practices that also accept this card. For more information on practices local to you that accept CareCredit, call 1-800-839-9078

HOW DO I APPLY FOR A CARD?

Previously, you had to come in and do your application in person so that your identification could be checked. Now an on-line application is available. It only takes a few minutes to approve you and establish a credit line.

To apply, visit:

www.carecredit.com

Feral Cat Project ReminderCVMA Feral Cat logo

We can spay or neuter a feral cat you bring in at NO COST to you, thanks to the Feral Cat altering project, sponsored by the California Veterinary Medical Association and a generous grant from Maddie’s Fund.

The program is scheduled to end on June 30, 2002. That’s ten months away to take advantage of this opportunity to get any feral cats around your property spayed or neutered, helping to deal with the overpopulation of these unowned cats, and protecting the feral cats from euthenasia should they ever be captured by animal control.

For more information on this program, click here.

WHAT’S NEW ON OUR WEB SITE (since last month)

    MALESSEZIA DERMATITIS
In English this means “yeast infection of the skin.” It’s one of the stinkiest and itchiest conditions treated in veterinary dermatology, and it is one of the chief reasons a previously well-controlled allergic dog might suddenly increase itching. What to do? Find out here in one of the newest pages in the Pet Web Library.

    DEGENERATIVE JOINT DISEASE
Arthritis pain is an important cause of discomfort and loss of mobility in aged pets. There are numerous remedies on the market, but choosing the best one for your pet can be confusing. Which ones can be combined? Which are proven reliable? Which only work in some individuals but not others? To read up on your choices, visit this page in The Pet Web Library.
