HOLIDAY PET HAZARDS

HOLIDAY SAFETY TIPS
EACH HOLIDAY SEASON WE OFFER A REMINDER OF
THE HAZARDS OF THE SEASON THAT FACE YOUR PET

  RIBBONS & TINSEL

Especially interesting for cats and kittens, but dangerous to chew or swallow. An intestinal foreign body is a life-threatening event.

  ELECTRIC LIGHT CORDS

Teething puppies and playful young cats can bite through a cord, burn their mouth or cause a neurologic reaction leading the chest to fill with fluid. Either way, it’s an emergency you (or your pet) don’t need.

  CHOCOLATE

Tastes good but is toxic to pets. The darker the chocolate the worse the syndrome. The fat and sugar can cause a toxic pancreatitis, while the “methylxomthines” in chocolate can lead to seizures or even death.

  DECORATIVE PLANTS

Some are toxic (such as mistletoe), some just cause a bellyache (such as poinsettia). Be familiar with what plants you plan to have on display. For more information, visit the ASPCA Toxic and Non-Toxic Plants web site at:

 www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

  COOKING

Keep pets out of the kitchen during the hustle and bustle of the season. The last thing you want is for someone you love to get underfoot and get burned from spillage.

What about making your own for free?

Paperlesspost.com has cards for free that can be personalized.

Canva.com offers a more extensive set of options similar to building your own web site from a template. Their platform is also free and your own pet images can be used.

DID YOU KNOW...

...You Can Donate Money to Charity
      Without Actually Spending Money?

The Holidays are a time for sharing and giving to those less fortunate. But what if you don't have any extra money? How do you support pets in need:

Charity Donations that Don't Cost You Anything

The Giving Spirit of the Season: Charity and Non-Profit Donation At No Cost To You

During the Holiday Season, we send special good wishes to those in need and focus extra attention on helping those in need. Many of us would love to send money to charity but have little to spare. Luckily, there are ways to support your favorite charities (our favorites are local animal rescue groups) without actually spending your own money. Here's how:

AmazonSmile

www.Smile.Amazon.com

Shop at Amazon.com much? Sign up for Amazon smile at and pick a charity from the over a million charities listed. (We recommend Rin's Rescues, Kitty Devore Rescue Network, Westside German Shepherd Rescue, Voice for the Animals, or Dogs without Borders.) Shop normally with the same Amazon prices and selection. Your account information from Amazon.com automatically transfers to AmazonSmile but 0.5% of the purchase price is donated to your charity by the AmazonSmile foundation. No cost to you.

Tab For a Cause

www.TabforaCause.org

Google chrome and Mozilla Firefox users can donate to charity simply by opening tabs in their browser. See the above web site for the list of charities supported.

Browse For the Cause

www.BrowsefortheCause.com

Download Browse For The Cause and donate to your favorite charity with ZERO out of pocket expense, for life!

The Animal Rescue Site

TheAnimalRescuesite.greatergood.com

The Animal Rescue Site sells pet related accessories but you can click their big purple button once a day and donate food and supplies to animal rescue groups and shelters all over the country at no cost to you. Try it now!

Good Search

www.Goodsearch.com

This search engine, powered by Yahoo, will find whatever you are looking up on the internet but will donate a penny to a charity every time you use it. Sign up for any number of charities such as those listed above.

INTERESTING EXTERNAL LINK:
SANTA'S REINDEER GET CERTIFIED EARLY FOR FLIGHT THIS YEAR.
CHECK THE PAPERWORK YOURSELF.

North Pole Seal

Animals require proper certification for travel especially where foreign countries are involved but what about Santa's reindeer? They have to be in tip-top shape for their big flight plus it is important that they do not transfer infectious agents from one country to another. How are they certified?

Turns out that certification of Santa's herd is part of the job for the president of the AVMA.

Scrutinize the paperwork yourself:

And don't forget to check out Norad's Santa Tracker:
